During Term 3 and Term 4 in 2019 the Co-Leads and AST’s had an amazing opportunity to listen to our young people. The interviews were to provide qualitative data that focused on big questions we had from analysing the Wellbeing @ School Data as a Kāhui Ako. We interviewed groups of children from 8 years old through to 18 year olds to find out more from them on how they learn the best and how teachers provide a safe and nurturing climate for learning. It took us a while to develop our questions so that they were crafted for all ages.
We recorded all sessions and then using the transcripts and audio we found common themes across the schools and strengths and areas to consider in each school. We then developed a narrative for each school as a way to summarise the messages and as a resource for staff workshops and discussions.
“Teachers who are good at building relationships are able to identify the good things about our work, praise our effort, progress and strengths.”
“I like to be recognised for my hard work. I hate it when I do so much hard work and the teacher doesn’t acknowledge it.”
“I don’t like showing stuff in front of the whole class, like speeches and writing."
"It’s personal work and sometimes I don’t want to share. I prefer to share it with a buddy.”
“We all learn differently and at different paces. Someone could find learning easy or hard. We would like our teachers to know that we are trying our best”.
